The Fly Junkies New Zealand Tour began in Queenstown in style. Upon collecting our rental car I was delighted to be upgraded from the most basic hatchback to a nice Subaru wagon. Travelling in style, my first stop was Queenstown airport via Fergburger. Gav was delighted to be greeted with a cold Speights and a juicy Fergburger, the best way to start any trip. We were joined by James Lee, a travelling angler.
Our first objective was to target salmon on fly. We made our way east to the Waitaki River. High discharge from Lake Benmore and a late Salmon run reduced our chance hooking any. Nevertheless, we made the most of the river and fished hard for Trout instead. With the assistance of Kurow icon ‘Squid’, we jet boated to slower stretches of water and fished into the “guts of the seams” as Squid liked to say. With a bit of luck we eventually “knuckled into em”, catching some energetic Browns and Rainbows. It was truly “peaches and cream”.
Our next stop was Lake Avenmore. The flats of Avenmore looked very inviting with blue skies and hardly a breeze. We stalked the shore for cruising Browns. Hooking them was possible, landing them was much harder. Once hooked, these fish took straight to the tussock grasses where they were a challenge to control and keep on. Needless to say, we didn’t land any fish. It was still another day paradise.
